I dreamed of opening my old, Italian recipe book and getting my hands dirty in the kitchen, preparing authentic Italian food for the people of Sheffield. Ester, who has managed to bring up two delightful children while cooking so brilliantly in the kitchen, and front of house Saverio give the city centre restaurant scene a much needed touch of class. We were up near the cathedral and spotted what was then Gusto Italiano, a cafe with the smell of the most amazing coffee wafting out through the door. For Lemmy and I, it all started when we were wandering around Sheffield one winters’ day back in 2008 looking, as always, for good Italian eateries which, at that time, were about as rare in Sheffield as a cream free spaghetti carbonara. WE HAD gathered for pre-dinner bottles of Peroni, just to get us in the mood for our Italian evening, and scrolled a little apprehensively through VeroGusto’s menu. To provide balance to this review, we all really enjoyed the food which was beautifully presented and very tasty. I’ve known this restaurant across two locations and three changes of name ever since Esterina Celva and partner Bruno Saverio opened on Church Street as Gusto-Italiano.

We started by scrubbing dishes in other people’s restaurants, with little money to our names but hope in our hearts.

So immediately the jolly, happy mood we had entered the restaurant with had a cloud put over it with the rude rather aggressive attitude.She talked of those early days back in 2007 when they’d just opened and things were quiet and they were thinking “another month of this and that’s it”. When they opened as Gusto in 2011 we went as soon as possible to find lots had changed…but all to the good. My hackles were raised and the waiter begrudgingly led us into the bar where we did enjoy a cocktail and were then seated at our table at 5. The menu had a great choice of food, we tried the Frito misto starter which was delicious, we had a lamb main course and a Raghu di mare pasta dish.
